StewartBrown Retirement LivingFinancial Performance Survey
In 2025 we launched the StewartBrown Retirement Living Financial Performance Survey.
The Survey collects operational, sales, resident contract structures, resident demographic, and financial data on an annual basis, giving retirement living operators the ability to evaluate and assess their data, providing valuable insights into the trends of key retirement living metrics at sector level, operator level and individual village/community level.
The Survey is available for participation by all providers of retirement living, independent living, assisted living, serviced apartments, seniors housing, seniors social housing and land lease communities.

What data is StewartBrown collecting?
The Survey uses proven systems and processes already established in the StewartBrown Aged Care Financial Performance Survey, which is the largest and most highly regarded financial benchmark in the health and aged care sector.
StewartBrown’s role is that of an independent third party to collect, cleanse, analyse and report the data. StewartBrown is not an advocate for any stakeholder in the sector.
The Survey collects information from Retirement Living operators on:
- Organisation activity and service mix
- Aged care service mix
- Resident contract structures
- Resident demographics
- Entry/ingoing contribution prices and sales
- Village services and amenities
- Care services provided within villages
- Recurrent service charges
- Key village operating income and expenditure items
- Village development plans
- Renovation/refurbishment and unit reinstatement cost
- Resident satisfaction level and net promoter scores

Why participate in the Survey?
The Survey has been purpose built to allow operators to benchmark and monitor their own financial performance to improve business outcomes.
The Survey provides evidence-based, objective analysis and accurate data to improve sector transparency and knowledge to key stakeholders. This will increase the ability for data-supported advocacy based on a national coverage of operators.
Each Survey participant receives the annual Retirement Living Performance Report, with detailed analysis of trends, succinct summary tables and clear graphs only available to Survey participants and a tailored individual participant report for each retirement living operator and individual village analysing the key metrics against sector comparators.
Participants receive access to the StewartBrown professional Analyst team, individualised Board and Executive presentations about the Survey results, and privileged access to customed reporting and business intelligence on our secure Retirement Living Survey portal.
